Important Septic System Dont’s

  • Don’t use a garbage disposal as it could diminish the lifespan of your septic system.
  • Don’t overload the system with high volumes of water.
  • Don’t use any septic tank additives. They are not helpful and may damage your disposal system. The tank already presents natural bacteria. Even with additives regular pumping of solids is still necessary.
  • Don’t allow vehicles or heavy equipment to drive or park over the septic system. This behavior could possibly compact the soil and damage the piping.
  • Don’t flush harmful items such as grease, feminine products, cigarette butts, paper towels, baby wipes, food chemicals or other harmful items.
  • Don’t plant anything near your septic system. Trees, brushes or other plantings roots will eventually grow toward the septic tank and cause major problems with your system.
  • Don’t flush any hazardous chemicals of any kind into your septic system.
  • Don’t dig anywhere or build anything near the septic system without knowing it’s exact location. You can usually obtain a sketch (azbilt) of systems at your local health department.
